The gardens at Upton Oaks have been developed over many years
and been created to harmonise with the style
of the 1911 Victorian Villa.
Upon purchase of the property in 1987 the villa was in a dilapidated
state and there was very little evidence left of any gardens. However
there was a wonderful old walnut tree and we could see the potential
for the villa. We spent endless hours restoring the villa and
at the same time started to create a garden.
Today the garden consists of separate garden areas, a small intimate
salad and herb kitchen garden, a large formal 17th century style
knot garden divided into different colour sections, perennial borders
and pond, water garden in the pool area plus large raised vegetable
beds and espaliered fruit trees on brick walls. A new addition is the wedding garden with a French styled, iron gazebo as the central feature.
Upton Oaks garden has graced the pages of numerous magazines plus television
screens and is visited by many national and international groups
each year. The garden has been awarded the rating of a Garden
of National Significance by the New Zealand Garden Trust.
